Scuba Diving in the Midwest?
Sometimes people are amazed that a sport such as SCUBA diving could exist in the Midwest. Actually, there are many interesting places to dive in Missouri and Arkansas that are within 2 to 3 hours of Kansas City. Oronogo (near Joplin) is a water park dedicated exclusively to SCUBA divers. It has an abundance of sunken artifacts including caves, boats, statues and even a twin engine airplane to look at! Beaver lake is close and holds beautiful rock ledges and numerous fish. Bull Shoals, Table Rock, and Stockton lake are excellent also and readily accessible. Spear Fishing is a pastime for many and provides meat on the table for the stealthy person with a good aim. A little further away (an hour south of St Louis) is the famous Bonne Terre Mine. Visibility of 300’ is common in this underground labyrinth of caverns and mine shafts. Be sure to check out the railroad tracks and engine on the bottom!
Keeping involved with diving and finding new friends to dive with is as easy as joining our dive club. The club meets each month to go diving or possibly to practice in our indoor pool during winter months. Outdoor BBQ's & plenty of diving at area lakes are the norm during summer months. SCUBA Trips to Mermet Springs, IL and other area lakes keep your skills sharp.
It is easy to get started diving. We have classes that meet in the evenings two nights a week for three weeks and also provide weekend classes if you are stretched for time. Pool and open water sessions are geared for learning in a fun environment. Classes are purposely kept small for individual attention. Come see us soon!
